The French don’t celebrate Halloween. That being said, there is no lack of costumes and decorations to be found at party stores. The kids were encouraged to dress up on the last day of school before fall break (18 October this year), and they were told that a princess or fairy costume wouldn’t do; a costume is supposed to be SCARY. So, instead of a Dachshund, Meredith went as a zombie, and instead of Harry Potter, Reid went as a ghoul. Corinna went, as planned, as a black cat because she and several friends had agreed to all go as black cats, but that didn’t stop her from fretting about her costume being scary enough. An American mom from CIPEC organized a trick-or-treating route that consisted of about 17 families in central Aix. The kids had fun, but I think they all agreed with Corinna’s summation: “That was a lot of walking for not much candy!” (They got plenty of candy.)
